Everyone, but mainly females, could probably detect it when they walked down the aisles in the winter looking for lip balm. The same boring same old that was redundant tubes of chap stick with mineral oil base and limited flavoring options. How fun, all the females thought as they walked to the register with their uninspired cylinder of beeswax and petrolatum.

Co-founders Sanjiv Mehra, and Jonathan Teller tapped into this need and decided to ask women what they would actually prefer when shopping for lip balms. More and more women wanted organic and natural ingredients, flavors that excited them, and pretty product packaging that could bring them joy as they used it several times a day. Their joint backgrounds in product packaging and startup incubators was the perfect combination to develop a product of this kind.

Early on, they invested in product machinery that could roll out the products as fast as they needed to meet the consumer demand. The intriguing product was selling itself at Walgreens and they needed a way to quickly fill the shelves at Target and Walmart. Only later on did they decide to market with celebrities who were also on the same level of cutting edge, trendy and well liked by females.

As Evolution of Smooth continues to expand they are offering more emollient products like lotions and shaving creams that their product devotees are already snapping up to replace the “boring old” in those aisles as well, and they are doing very well. As EOS lip balm continues to expand they will no doubt be shaking up all the other aisles of beauty and personal care with their innovative design, pretty packaging, and natural formulations. Let’s applaud the founders on their ingenious marketing and hope for more great products coming our way.
