Georgette Mulheir works to Increase International Awareness about the plight of Haitians
Georgette Mulheir is an internationally renowned social worker who has worked to improve the lives of deprived children across the world. In the year 2014, the US-based website socialworkdegree.com named Mulheir as one of the most influential social workers in the world. She has also authored four books about the rights of children. Georgette Mulheir now spreads awareness about the problems faced by Haitians through her organization Defend Haiti’s Democracy. Georgette Mulheir co-founded the organization Defend Haiti’s Democracy to increase international awareness about human rights violations by the dictatorial regime in Haiti.
Historically, Haitians were the first to rebel against enslavement. They founded the first independent republic by former slaves in the Americas. The Haitian people have remained poor because of devastating natural calamities, international debt and dictatorial regimes (Newsanyway).
Activist and human rights defender Georgette Mulheir has worked with Haitian children as a child rights-oriented social worker before launching Defend Haiti’s Democracy. Her efforts have proved fruitful and international legal experts and US elected officials are urging their governments to work towards ending the dictatorial regime in Haiti and restoring democracy. Peace in Haiti and a democratic government will help poor and vulnerable Haitians especially women and children get the social and healthcare services they need to lead a better quality of life.
